Easton, PA, August 12, 2019 - For Immediate Release:
Gallery On Fourth is pleased to present Aesop's Fables, an exhibition of 22 experimental works on paper by Master Printmaker Dan Welden. The exhibition will launch with an Opening Reception on Saturday evening, August 17 from 6 – 9 PM and will remain on view through Sunday, October 6. On closing day, the Gallery will host a reception from 12 – 5 PM, featuring a talk by Dan Welden at 2 PM.
Aesop’s Fables is an ode to the ancient Greek tales of the same name. But at its core, this extraordinary body of work is a visual manifestation of exploration, discovery and transformation. It is a conceptual journey of "opposites," born from a random assemblage of oxidized zinc plates which Dan found sandwiched together while he was exploring the ruins of an abandoned estate. As each found plate was a naturally-occurring mirror image of its oxidized mate, so each work Dan was inspired to create is a reflection or "opposite" of its mate; and each pair of works is a metaphorical, rather than literal, reference to the ancient tales after which they are named. Making his own tools, Dan employed drypoint lines, salt etch, ink, paper and a press to conjure from these dilapidated plates a powerful presentation in black and white. Dan describes his creative process thusly: “I am an experimenter, explorer and a seeker of beauty. When I set out to work, there is no image in mind, but the vision unfolds as the work evolves. So goes my act of creativity, being aware of what resonates in front of me and responding with marks, colors and textures” Dan Welden's Aesop's Fables is a tour-de-force of formal yet enigmatic visual beauty.
“I’m thrilled to present Aesop’s Fables at Gallery On Fourth,” states Director Lisa Kovacs. “I was introduced to Dan when he exhibited this series at Soft Machine Gallery in Allentown earlier this year. I was indelibly moved by his work and his words. Dan is a gifted and multi-faceted artist whose warmth and generosity belie his stature in the art world. Visitors to the Gallery will be richly rewarded by the experience of seeing these amazing works of art.”
